Listening and the Art of Pastoral Caring – Appreciation

On Sat. Oct. 27, 2012, I attended a well presented, thought provoking,
practical workshop presented by MILC on pastoral care visiting. The
workshop was well attended and the presenters were very knowledgeable
about their subjects. The morning presenters were Rev. Catherine
Sommerville and Madeleine Sauve (from Warmhearts). The presentations were
on the art of communicating. We covered conversation starters, how we
communicate and communication blockers. Not only did we listen but we had
an opportunity to practice what we learned. The topic of confidentiality
sparked a lot of discussion. Two inspirational videos were presented.

Following a great lunch Allison Cline-Dean, Chaplain, Pioneer Manor and
Sister Costanza Romano, Chaplain, St. Joseph’s Health Centre presented some
very practical information on how to do pastoral visiting. There was
plenty of opportunity to ask questions. We left with a wealth of
information as well as a Prayer Book for Pastoral Visitors.
A couple of messages I took away: 55% of communication is through body language – I’ll
be thinking twice about sitting with my arms and legs folded! Taking care of oneself is important to prevent burnout.

From the discussion and chatter that took place I would say that the day was
informative for the attendees.
