The Art of Pastoral Caring – Session 2
The Manitou Intentional Learning Community invites you to participate in a series of workshops designed to help you to create a caring community in your church. The event will take place on Saturday, January 26th from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at St Luke’s United Church, Bancroft Drive, Sudbury.

The sessions:
The Art of Listening
A workshop on Active Listening led by Lianne Tooley will provide training and practice in developing deep listening skills. Lianne works in the Mood and Anxiety Program at Health Sciences North and has extensive experience in Mental Health. She says: “In my field of work listening to what people don’t say can be just as important as listening to what they do say with words.”
Caring Communication in a High-Tech Culture
The Venerable Anne Germond, is the Rector of the Church of the Ascension, and the Chaplain to the Greater Sudbury Police Service in which role she provides a “calm, empathetic presence”. Anne will discuss ways in which telephone and email communication can be effective tools in pastoral care.
Prayer, Script-Free
A session on the role of prayer in pastoral care and on developing skills for “prayer without practice” will be led by The Rev. Dawn Vaneyk of St. Peter’s United Church. Dawn is a respected and inspiring spiritual leader with extensive experience in pastoral care.
A Tender Trust
The Rev. Catherine Somerville, Manitou Conference, United Church of Canada, will discuss legal and ethical issues related to Duty of Care for those involved in pastoral and friendly visiting. As Manitou Conference Personnel Minister, Catherine fulfills a wide variety of roles with great skill and compassion. Her work includes providing pastoral care for ministry personnel and their families and resourcing training workshops.
Registration:
$35 ($30 for those who participated in Session 1 in October) includes a light lunch.
